Are Beaconsfield the best team in the world? Is that why Hungerford can't beat them no matter what side either team puts out! It was a strange game where the only real fireworks on the pitch were the dudds left over from Sunday's night's display at Bulpit Lane, an event which the people of Hungerford will turn out to support, so they do know where the football club is then!
Hungerford without Gosling, Bedwell, Concannon, Clark, Fitch all watching from the touchline dominated possesion but the SYCOB keeper was rarely streached into a difficult save. The strike partnership of Terry and Shand was an endevouring but frustrating one where you felt they were just a second away from something spectaular but at the same time only a play away from something sloppy. Despite this both of them went close to scoring in the first half. Brewer back in the centre of midfield added some energy to the game and didn't give SYCOB's players any time on the ball, Edney and McMeeking were deployed on the wings and played OK in unfamiliar terriroty.
Ironically the best chance of the first half feel to the visitors late on when a weak back header from Pilling was intercepted by a SYCOB striker and Dominic Green saved well with his feet from a one on one a late let off for Hungerford.
The second half panned out much as the first did, Shand was unlucky to hit the post half way through after a good cross from Terry. Terry was starting to drift down the right and was on top of Edney a lot of the time leaving Shand alone in the box more often than not as McMeeking, Brewer and Mills are not naturally attck minded players. The young pacy guns of Guy and Nutley were left on the bench as the game headed towards a lightly 0 - 0. As the end neared with much of the crowd anticipating but not wanting extra time you felt it was going to be SYCOB who would score and they did with less than 8 minutes to go after the Hungerford defence did a disappearing act worthy of Paul Daniels in his 1980s pomp to leave Dominic Green exposed and the score at 1 - 0.
Hungerford did rally and it was Shand who tapped in what we thought would be a goal that took us into extra time, he was rewarded by being subbed for Guy, and only then for Hungerford to fall foul of what had been one of thier faults all night. You see Hungerford mid way through the game had adopted a shoot on sight policy even when an easier pass was on it seemed to be either that or try to produce a Maradona-esque run to produce a goal. It was Jim Smith's 30 yard drive into the clubhouse that produced Beaconsfield's winner. The quick thinking SYCOB keeper launched a goal kick into Hungerford left back territory and their stiker produced a wonder 35 yard finish off the underside of the bar that stunned everyone from Dominic Green to the watchers from the sidelines. Hungerford exiting 2 cups in 2 weeks and scuppering plans to build a 2007/08 trophy room on the end of the clubhouse.
Team
Dominic - Produced two good saves, & didn't have a chance with either goal
Joner - Did well in his first full game back, probably used the ball better than the other defenders
Jim-Bob - Must stop shooting and start using that simple forward pass to te winger or striker
Thommo - Did well in the first half but another starting his first full game for a while showed late on.
Pillsy - Nearly cost us a goal before half time, unusually quiet too from the captain
Bruiser - High energy levels and much of what you expect will he be unleased on North Leigh?
Edders - Another guilty of shooting on sight & was treading on Tarricks toes when Tarrick drifted wanted to go up front you felt.
Millsy - Got booked early on and didn't do much after
Shand - Got one nearly got two so close but so far from a good game
Tarrick - Wanted to drift wider and maybe should have been put wider in the 2nd half but was Hungerford's main danger man
McMeeking - Did OK on the wing but defended more than attacked and needs to shoot like he means it!
SUBS
Guy - Only got five minutes at the death,
Nuttley - Sat and watched like the rest of us
